UPDATE: Halfway through Week 4. Super inspiring and exciting to be doing this program. Can now get through the warmups almost at the pace of the people on the DVD (during warm up only!) - this is a huge improvement over when I first started, but I still need to stop DVD during the rest of the workout to catch my breath (usually 5-6 times per DVD for 60-90 seconds each). Still there has been progress! Can't believe I wrote in my first update above that "can't even complete some of the moves more than 2 or 3 times" - that's not the case at all anymore. I can do all the moves, albeit much more slowly than the people on the video. Emergence of a six pack starting - or I can at least see where that six pack will be! Resting heart rate has dropped significantly to levels that are considered very athletic for my age group. Although I'm getting more fit, the program feels harder than ever - probably because I was so far from keeping up with the pace during the first few weeks that I wasn't even close to doing the real workout (and still am not). Core muscles developing in a way they have never done before. Please note I am pairing Insanity with lifting (upper body) 2-3 times/week - pretty easy to do because I don't feel these muscles are drained too much by the workout. That may be, in part, because I can't do good enough push ups during Insanity - I just can't keep up aerobically - so my upper body doesn't get the full workout of the people on the DVD. I had been supplementing Insanity with other lower body workouts (weights, running, elliptical) - had to eliminate all of those because leg muscles simply could not recover fast enough. I also throw in yoga 1-2x a week on top of Insanity. The intensity of exercise program is leading to all sorts of other diet/lifestyle changes - simply don't have the same cravings for pasta or pizza or carbs anymore. Actually holding off on meeting some people that I haven't seen for a few weeks so that I can get to the end of the program and see their reactions to my new physique. Have lost about 1.5 belt notches since starting (I began Insanity with a normal BMI so was not expecting to lose a lot of belt notches). Feel much more confident. These workouts are way harder than training for the half marathon. By the way, the women on the DVD seem to outperform the men (e.g., speed, number of reps/exercise), so this is not just a program for the guys :-)
UPDATE: Just started week 6, month 2. Let me just say I had no idea how hard this was going to get in month 2! In month 1, I could workout 4-6 times a week in the evenings after doing Insanity in the AM - its not that I was finding Insanity easy (I could still barely keep up) but I was recovering quickly. Month 1 is what I expected and would have made me happy if it just ended there because it's a serious accomplishment in its own right. Month 2 is completely different. I've never done a workout this hard. I can't believe I got through two days of it. I'm back to stopping the DVD 10-15 times per workout for additional rests. I feel like I need to seriously focus on pre-workout hydration and diet to get through each session. That said, I definitely feel like i'm on route to being in best shape of my life. Note: don't skip recovery week - you'll need it!
UPDATE: Just started week 7, day 1. Recovered enough to start to add my weights and occassional run back into my workout. Only stopped DVD twice on Max Cardio today (which, granted is much easier for me than Max Pylo or Max Cicuit) - but wow! Never thought I would get here! I think for once someone on the DVD took a rest before me!! That said, pre-workout nutrition (and nutrition overall) has become critical. Need to eat and pre-hydrate with Gatorade 45-60 min ahead of workout - no more water or Poweade Zero. Overall I feel 10x better than before, more confident, calmer, higher energy, requiring less sleep, and less coffee. Imagine I've lost about 10 lbs of fat and have gained 15lbs of muscle (I'm not trying to lose weight and am lifting 2x a week in addition to Insanity). I now actively crave this workout. What is most "Insane" about all this? How much I have changed!
UPDATE: Week 8, day 5. First workout without stopping the DVD (Max Circuit)!
UPDATE: Just finished the program today. Feel amazing. Can't believe I've done this. Biggest accomplishment I've had in a while. Didn't stop DVD once in the past week. Just narrowly missed beating Chris on my last Fit Test, although my final scores now beat Tania and Chris's starting scores (which means I'm in better shape than Super Athlete Tania and Chris the Marathoner were when they started Insanity - not bad!). Overall, this has been a wild ride and a great experience. I'm stronger than I've been in a very long time, I have core muscles that I've never had before (I can do the incline sit up bench at the gym at its steepest height *with* a 35 lbs plate now, no problem), and I'm more aerobically fit than I've been since my early 20's. For instance, I have run 7 miles on my Insanity "rest days." My resting heart rate is down about 20 beats per minute and my blood pressure is down 15 points to low/normal. I was on the thin side to begin with, but I've still lost one notch on my belt. I now read exercises that are recommended in men's magazines (like "jump rope for 15 seconds and rest for 45) and they sound like an utter joke. I guess the only thing I'm worried about is what I should do next! Probably Insanity again or Asylum! Thank you, Shaun T. This was awesome. Kinda saved my life.
UPDATE: Started Insanity from the beginning again, immediately after finishing the whole program. Month 1 work outs are now pretty easy for me. There are still moments when I stop to catch my breath for 3-8 seconds during Level 1/2/3 drills or Ski Abs, but that's it. The rest I just power through and mostly keep up with the team on TV and very often beat many of them. So now I've been doing Insanity in one form or another for 11 weeks. I was just told by a friend whom I haven't seen in a few months that I, literally, look 10 years younger. I've tried to convince several friends to try Insanity and may succeed in a case or two. They really need it! Probably best thing is that my dad has seen my before/after photos and transformation and is now motivated to start this own exercise routine (Thank God!). Other people now claim that I have a six pack, so I guess I can say I do!
I got this set thinking that, after a week or two, I'd get bored and ditch it in a box with the rest.
Except that didn't happen.
Instead, I got hooked. I committed to getting through the first week the best way I could. And I did. After that, I "craved" the workouts in a way that you won't understand until you try them out.
Now, a short bit of background. First, I'm 38. I got the Insanity Workout last year and started doing it in May. I made it through 3 full weeks before rolling my ankle on one of the exercises (Suicide Drills). I was out of commission for several MONTHS after that.
I had to wait until this year (2013) and I completely started over from scratch...just being much more careful this time with certain exercises like Suicide Drills that can easily roll your ankles if you're not super careful.
What I noticed after my first week: I quickly went from being thoroughly exhausted (on Day 1) to being able to "hold my own" by the end of the week. I was also walking taller.
By the end of week two: My stomach was MELTING OFF. Quickly! And everyone started to take notice just as fast.
By the end of week three: My stomach was "tight" like a washboard. (Still no six-pack but I'm not really going for that anyway.) About 85% of my back fat and belly rolls were GONE! My butt felt super tight and I could see an amazing difference in my legs and thighs.
By the end of week four: My body felt transformed. Almost completely. About 90% of my belly rolls and back fat is gone. I can't believe that I've had so much progress in less than a calendar month.
The fifth week is the "recovery" week where I'm at right now. Once I'm done with the recovery week, I have another 4 weeks to go.
So, why write this review when I'm only 1/2 way through?
Because, so far, this Insanity Workout is freakin' amazing.
NOTHING (and I mean NOTHING!!) has EVER "worked" before to get me in shape...especially so quickly!! I mean, the fat is MELTING OFF super fast!
Furthermore, I should tell you that I'm NOT following ANY type of special diet plan. I simply do NOT have that type of willpower. Instead, I'm controlling my appetite in an amazing way with a diet pill called Black Widow ( Hi-tech Pharmaceuticals Black Widow Capsules, 90-Count ). I've taken a lot of diet pills (prescription and over-the-counter) and this Black Widow is the most effective when it comes to suppressing the appetite and providing energy (which is great for the workouts). So...no special diet. Just eating much less (and not feeling deprived either).
Between the appetite suppressant pills and this Insanity Workout, I'm seeing such incredible transformations in my body in such a ridiculously little period of time that I've NEVER seen doing any other type of diet or workout regimen.
Now, I should warn you: this workout is HARD! But DO THE BEST YOU CAN!!
What I love is that everyone in the video is in 100% TOP SHAPE yet, during some periods, some of them have to stop and take a break because it gets really tough sometimes. That's what makes me not feel so bad when I have to gets some water or take a short break...because if these in-shape people have to stop then it's okay when I definitely have to stop for a short time. I think it's great from a psychological perspective that they did this...allowing us to see these people have to take periodic breaks when most other videos would never allow you to see this, making you feel like a loser when you can't keep up with everybody in the class. Or they'll have some 300lb. heifer who can't keep up and you feel like you're just like her. And you want to quit because you feel like a loser. But they don't do that in the Insanity Workout. No out-of-shape people whatsoever. And yet these men and women can't do it all making it okay to take breaks and work your way up the fitness ladder.
No, I don't do absolutely every exercise 100% like of the people are able to do throughout the video but, hell, I've had some really amazing results just doing the best I can and giving it my version of 100%. And that's what you have to remember when doing this workout. Press play and do the best you can. Don't get psyched out if you can't keep up because you'll just keep getting better with every workout. And eventually you'll quickly start to see the fat melt off which will keep you going and going. Results are what get people to keep going and this program is the only one that delivers in that department.
I've had to improvise with the ab video. I actually use the Ab Burner portion of ChaLEAN Extreme DVD Workout because, after doing an Insanity Workout for 40 minutes (which is how long each workout is, approximately), I can't do another 15 minutes of standing abs, especially springing high into the air with a jump over and over again that's so high you could jump over a fence. By then I'm too exhausted and end up doing a very poor job with the workout so I improvise with another ab video which allows me to use the floor instead of standing. If you have sensitive knees (like I do) then you'll probably have to do this as well.
Also, I find myself doing 1/2 or completely skipping the recovery video on Day 4 of each week. I know, that's cheating. So what? I'd rather give myself a full recovery (by taking a break) then doing the remaining 2 videos for the week on Friday and Saturday than doing a half-assed job on those important cardio-burning videos because I didn't get a sufficient muscle break. Even by doing this (by skipping the video), not following the diet plan (but taking appetite suppressants), and by substituting the ab video, I'm still seeing some amazing results and you will too if you just PRESS PLAY, DO THE BEST YOU CAN, and KEEP IT UP!
UPDATE: I finished. Whooo-Hooo!!! I've never completed ANY workout to the end before. What a great feeling.
Okay, some things to report about the second half of the Insanity Workout: it's MUCH HARDER than the first but, if you do all the workouts in the first half, you'll be prepared enough for the second half (even though you'll probably disagree during the first week). The workouts are about an hour each, increasing from 12 to 15 minutes in length from the first four weeks.
Also, they make you do the Fit Test right before doing a long workout...and who the hell can realistically pull that off? The Fit Tests run a little over 20 minutes and are workouts in and of themselves AND you have to do a 47 minute (the first time) and 59 minute (the second time) workout AFTER the Fit Test. What?? So, after the first Fit Test in the second half of the Insanity Workout, I ditched the next one because I can care less about how I measured up in performance on certain exercises compared to the time before. I know I'm getting stronger and fitter and I don't need a stupid test to tell me that I am. It's okay to do the Fit Test when that's ALL you have to do that day for a workout. But when adding another workout AFTER the Fit Test (as with the second half) then...it's really tough and you'll probably question whether it's worth it, like I did. Further, I found that I wasn't performing well in the later Fit Tests because the Insanity Workout program kicks your ass. Your body is worked out to the max all the time. So I found that I was doing the same or slightly worse with each Fit Test...and that's kind of depressing (which is another reason I stopped doing them).
So, what's next? Tomorrow I start with the Fit Test and I'm going to do another round FROM THE VERY BEGINNING with the Insanity Workout. I'm starting completely over from scratch because I want to keep my new awesome body while seeing how much better I'll perform with the "easier" first half now that I'm in shape.
By the way, I've NEVER been this in shape in my entire adult life. I'm a typical workout "failure" and yet I pulled this off 100% and now going in for Round #2; that's how addicting this is. (And this is from someone who absolutely HATES working out!)
No, I can't tell you how much weight I lost because I decided that a scale was no longer my measure to tell me that I "looked" good. But I went down from a size 10 to a size 8 and I can even fit in a loose size 6 now (and this is excellent for a large-boned tall gal like myself). My stomach looks like one of those women on the cover of a fitness magazine. Even after my tummy tuck surgery 3 years ago, my tummy didn't look this freakin' awesome! No, I don't "diet." I basically eat what I want (in portions). And I've never felt better in my life. I'm not depressed anymore. I walk taller. Basic tasks like walking up the stairs don't exhaust me anymore. And my overall demeanor of life in general is positive and enthusiastic. I credit ALL of this to Shaun T. and the Insanity Workout...and, of course, me for actually following through.
What makes this workout successful? Fast results. Most people don't stick with a program because they sweat their asses off week after week and don't notice a difference so they drop out and take to eating Doritos on the couch watching People's Court. Since you see the fast results, you stay motivated to keep going and going. And that's why the Insanity Workout is so freakin' awesome. You'll love it. Give it a shot!
